After his operation, Charlie is enlightened, but the question remains as to whether or not it is a positive thing. Spelling and grammar mistakes aside, Charlie displays a profound understanding in his diary entry. His experiences have taught him that being told to relax is for the benefit of someone else. It is easier for the dentist or the doctor to do his job if the patient relaxes. However, it does not negate the pain that the patient suffers during a procedure.

I want you to be carefull and do the best you can do. You got yourself a new job with a 5 doller raise. Charlie has learned that being smarter is not necessarily a virtue. He gets a raise and gets to move up from janitor to mixer, but the men that he thought were his friends are angry with him. His IQ has improved but he does not yet understand all that is happening in his workplace. He feels that he does not particularly want this advancement or his friends to be angry with him.

And then I heard my answers—childish, impossible things. Charlie is in shock over the person he hears on the recorder. He has trouble relating to the voice that he hears. His new self was insulted by the manner in which he was treated by Burt.

Had he used me all these years to help him steal? When Charlie realizes that there is a strong possibility that he has been unknowingly helping Gimpy to steal from Mr. Donner, he is infuriated. While Charlie demonstrates immense physical change in the development of mental ability, that development only creates social and emotions challenges for him.

It is a result of science—the operation—in which readers are interested. The emotional consequences of the experiment make a statement against the progress of science.

Through knowledge comes awareness. For better or worse, memories surface that provide Charlie with understanding about his childhood and explain his intense need to improve his intellect. In the end, science has progressed Charlie no further; he comes full circle, returning to the same circumstances as before the operation. At the Beekman science lab, Charlie is angered from the onset that Algernon is motivated by food.

He eats only if he solves ever-changing puzzles and mazes, the solutions to which unlock his food. Before the operation, Charlie sees this as cruel. Later in the novel, he creates mazes for Algernon that provide the mouse with the mere satisfaction of solving them. Charlie creates a diversion and leaves. Eventually, he confronts Nemur, only to realize that he has also succumbed to arrogance and superiority over those who have provided the opportunity for his intellectual development.

This is initially evident when he becomes ashamed at realizing his coworkers were using him as the butt of their jokes. The realization causes tension, as Charlie understands that what he mistook for friendship was really teasing.
